The History of LAKES Eye Clinic
Dr. Femrite, originally from Cold Spring, returned to central Minnesota in 2001 following a completed eye care residency in Minneapolis. Dr. Femrite opened LAKES Eye Clinic in May 2006. Since, the clinic has expanded both staff and services to meet the needs of central MN. We continually add new optometric equipment to meet current standards of care and “shop” the optical world to bring you the most up to date optical selections available. In 2019 we expanded our clinic space, moving “down the hall” but remaining in the Cold Spring Business Center. Our space increased 3x to serve your needs more efficiently!
LAKES Eye Clinic provides comprehensive eye examinations and eye health assessment for all ages. We have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease including dry eye, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. We offer surgical co management of LASIK and cataract surgery and urgent care services.
Our new optical provides a relaxed, open and fresh space to shop traditional and trendy eyewear.
Our knowledgeable staff research optical products and manufacturers to bring you the most up to date eyeglasses and spectacle lens selection available.

Dr. Mary Jo Femrite
Dr. Mary Jo Femrite, a graduate of ROCORI High School, attended Moorhead State University and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Chemistry. She attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL and received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 2000. Dr. Femrite moved back to Minnesota and completed a residency with Minnesota Eye Consultants in 2001, specializing in eye disease management, LASIK surgery, and comprehensive eye care. Following her residency, Dr. Femrite continued in private practice from 2001-2006. Dr. Femrite, along with support from her husband and family, opened LAKES Eye Clinic in May 2006. She is active in the Minnesota Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association and the Cold Spring Chamber of Commerce. She has presented several case reports, research studies, and lectures to the optometric community and public.
Dr. Femrite currently resides in the Cold Spring community with her husband and two children. When not at LAKES Eye Clinic, she can be found at ROCORI sporting events, volunteering at her local church or participating in community events, such as the business showcase and Hometown Pride Days. She enjoys traveling, spending time at the lake, gardening and reading
Shannon Evans, Optometric assistant, was born and raised in Cold Spring and currently resides in Richmond. After graduating from ROCORI High School, she enrolled in the optometric assistant program and received her COA, Certified Optometric Assistant, certification. Shannon has experience in all aspects of the optical field, including optician, technician and management. She continues her education through attending lectures and courses through the Minnesota Para Optometric association and Vision Expo meetings. In addition, Shannon is a certified lens specialist with Shamir manufacturing. In her free time, Shannon enjoys spending time with her family, traveling and motorcycling.
Michelle Schreifels, Optometric assistant, is originally from Cold Spring and a ROCORI graduate. Michelle joined us with a background in the dental and retail industry. Since joining LAKES Eye Clinic, she has taken numerous classes and instruction from professionals in the field of opticianry, including lens manufacturing specialists and frame manufactures. She attended and completed Walman Dispensing Academy; a detailed series of courses designed for the optician. In addition, she has attended national optometry and opticianry classes and seminars to further her optical knowledge. In her free time, Michelle enjoys traveling, spending time with friends and family and photography.
Kristine Krebs, Optometric assistant, hails from Avon MN, living currently in the Cold Spring community. Kristine has been educated in the field of opticianry at Walman Dispensing Academy. In addition, she has been involved in numerous educational seminars and lectures from professionals in the field, including frame and lens manufacturing. Kristine continues to learn the field of optician and is excited to expand her knowledge through both state and national meetings. In her free time, Kristine enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting and spending time by the lake with family and friends.
Heather Wacha, Optometric technician, relocated to the Cold Spring area in 2017. Heather has previous experience and training in the health care field and is excited to transition into caring for the eyes of our community. She is looking forward to ongoing training and plans to attend Walman Dispensing Academy spring 2020. In her free time, Heather enjoys camping, spending time with her family and two dogs.
